36 Community Volunteers Come to Aid Newburgh Armory Unity Center and Camp Robbins During United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region’s June 21 Day of Action
Poughkeepsie’s Clinton and Middletown’s Carter Elementary Schools Get Books for Summer Reading
POUGHKEEPSIE & MONTGOMERY – 36 volunteers from eight local businesses and organizations participated in United Way’s Day of Action on June 21. Volunteers spruced up the YMCA of Dutchess & Eastern Orange’s Camp Robbins in Walden and the Newburgh Armory Unity Center as part of its effort to support education and ongoing learning throughout the summer.
Earlier in the week, United Way staff visited the 2nd and 3rd grade students at Gov. George Clinton Elementary School in Poughkeepsie and 2nd graders at William A. Carter Elementary in Middletown to give out 420 books for the youngsters to read during their summer vacations.
At Camp Robbins, volunteers from YMCA of Dutchess & Eastern Orange, Provident Bank, Myles Financial Services and United Way painted picnic tables, power washed the Smith Lodge as well as completed other work to help the camp get ready to open for the summer.
Anthony Nappo, a financial professional with Myles Financial Services in the Village of Florida, was helping to paint the pool area at Camp Robbins. “I am always looking for opportunities to get out and help out our community,” he said. “I’m an Orange County native and I’m excited to be here.”
“Many people don’t realize how much work needs to be done (to open the camp),” said Camp Director Jennifer Bailey. “It’s a big job and it takes many weeks to prepare. It’s a blessing that United Way could coordinate volunteers to come out today!”
At the Newburgh Armory Unity Center, volunteers from Vanacore, DeBenedictus,DiGovanni & Weddell LLP, Liberty Mutual Insurance, Safe Harbors of the Hudson and Central Hudson Gas & Electric worked to rehabilitate a community garden including moving mulch, preparing soil for planting and constructing compost beds.
“I’m a big believer in giving back to the community” said Dan Zica of Vanacore,DeBenedictus, DiGovanni & Weddell LLP who volunteered at Newburgh Armory Unity Center. “This project is going to benefit children and we work with a lot of kids so we are happy to take part in it!”
“United Way is committed to helping children achieve their potential through education as well as creating access to nutritious foods and recreation to decrease obesity,” said United Way President and CEO Don Hammond about the week’s activities. “We see an opportunity to reach out within our community to harness the power, passion and experience of men and women and children to make a difference.”
Over the course of the next year United Way will work with nonprofits to identify programs and projects where inpiduals can volunteer in the community. The next Day of Caring is set for October 26, 2013.
